“Friendship is more responsible for happiness in marriage than love” – Chief Judge CRS

The Chief Judge of Cross River State, Justice Michael Edem has opined that happiness in marriage is attributable more to the level of friendship the couple attain than love.
Speaking as a Special Guest of Honour and Chairman of a wedding reception after the solemnization of marriage between former Miss Minika Richard Efa, a Barrister-at-Law and Mr. Edem Essien Edem, an Engineer by profession in Calabar, the Chief Judge maintained that as much as love is paramount, friendship breeds more love, happiness and understanding of each other.
He said if justice were to be done to the question, “Can we stay married after the wedding, then there wouldn’t have been the prevalence of divorce proceedings in the courts of law. All weddings are similar but every marriage is different!”
The Chief Judge expressed optimism and offered prayer to the young couple; Minika and Edem, saying “this marriage; we can really see difference in success and attainment. I have the belief and I have the hope. I have no doubt in my mind that they are bound to succeed and they will succeed.”
He advised the bride saying, “I know the bride is a lawyer. I will advise that, let her wig and gown be left in the office. Because as a lawyer in marriage she has two personalities and for her marriage to succeed, she should take the personality without the wig and gown. Let what you decide not be legal because you wished so, but it should be legal because both of you agreed so.”
He reiterated that “Unhappiness in marriage is not because there is no love but because there is no friendship! When you are friends, there is balance of equality”.
Justice Edem explained that he felt obliged to honour the invitation extended to him to be the chairman of the occasion because of his relationship with the father of the bride, late Etubom Barrister Richard Efa whom he took tutelage from as a young lawyer and he can rightly say, gave him a strong foundation in law practice”.
The occasion was attended by many other dignitaries including wife of the Deputy Governor of Cross River State, Mrs. Ivara Esu, Barrister Assam Assam SAN, Hon. Essien Ekpeyong Ayi, his Lordship, Bishop O. I Anam of the Mount Zion Light House Full Gospel where the wedding was conducted and some permanent secretaries in the state civil service as well as members of government boards and commissions among many other dignitaries.
In a vote of thanks, the Groom, Edem Essien Edem expressed his profound gratitude to the Chief Judge of the State and numerous other dignitaries that graced their occasion, noting that on behalf of his wife and him, they are grateful to everyone that came and even more grateful to God who did not only bless that occasion but gave him a friend as a wife.
